Despite being widowed for nearly two decades, Flowers maintains a positive outlook on life, crediting dancing as the key to her enduring happiness. When asked about the secret to her longevity, she consistently offers the advice of incorporating dance into one’s routine.
According to Flowers, age is irrelevant when it comes to the benefits of movement, emphasizing that staying active contributes to overall fitness and well-being. Observing people of various ages spending prolonged periods sitting, Flowers encourages others to recognize the importance of getting up and engaging in physical activity to enhance their health. While acknowledging that dancing may initially pose challenges for some, she assures that with proper guidance from a skilled instructor, individuals can develop a love for it.
Flowers advocates for a moderate approach to physical activity, emphasizing simple movements like bending knees to keep the body active. Even during the two-year lockdowns when her dance studio closed, Flowers remained committed to dancing, completing at least six home workouts daily to raise funds for frontline workers.
Lesley Tomlinson, Flowers’ friend, highlights that despite being 101 years old, Flowers is not reliant on maintenance medications and breezes through workouts without needing to catch her breath. Her doctors are consistently surprised during check-ups, with Flowers proudly sharing that she continues to teach dance and participate in ballet barre exercises.
Expressing her deep connection to dancing, Flowers asserts that she intends to keep dancing until her last days and hopes that won’t happen anytime soon, suggesting she’ll only hang up her dancing shoes when she’s “inside a box.”
