The 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne was celebrated on Sunday 6 February, becoming the first British monarch to do so.
Her Majesty the Queen gave a special greeting to the crowds at the commemoration, thanking them for their support over the past seven decades.
She also took the opportunity to thank her late husband, Prince Philip, for his “selfless” sacrifice as her slave. On this subject, the Queen made an important appeal, urging the nation to accept Camilla Parker-Bowles, her son-in-law, as Queen Consort when Prince Charles becomes king.
“I will forever be grateful for your continued loyalty and affection for me. I know that when the time comes to become king, you will give my son Charles and his wife Camilla the same support you gave me. I sincerely hope that Camilla will be recognized as the Queen Consort when that time comes,” added the Queen.
Her Majesty’s request surprised royal fans, not least because the Prince of Wales’s website had previously stated that she would be known as the Princess Consort, but also because the late Princess Diana’s continued popularity with the public complicated the situation, as according to the comments section of the royal family’s official Instagram account.
Many admirers of the monarchy have expressed dissatisfaction with Queen Elizabeth II’s decision. Believers wrote: “Diana, the true queen forever”, “Diana, alone”.
However, others seem delighted at the Queen’s request, including Kate Middleton and Prince William, who have publicly “appreciated” the Queen’s Instagram note through their accounts of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.
As a result of the Queen’s Proclamation, Camilla will be known as the Queen Consort when Charles becomes king. At that point, Prince William will assume the title of Prince of Wales, giving his wife Kate the title Princess of Wales, which has not been used since Diana’s horrific death in 1997.
A source told The Telegraph: “I’m sure it’s going to be a bittersweet moment.”
