ince its establishment in 1948, the University of California Men’s Octet has been a breeding ground for some of the institution’s most exceptional vocalists. Their repertoire knows no bounds, spanning across various music genres including pop, doo-wop, barbershop, and even Berkeley spirit songs.

As the curtains rose, all eight men took their positions on the stage, heads bowed and hands across their chests. Then, in a moment of anticipation, they lifted their heads and commenced their rendition of the timeless classic, “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The audience immediately erupted in excitement, recognizing the familiar melody.

Challenging themselves with a song that spans six minutes, the group showcased their extraordinary talent in a truly remarkable manner.

Positioned in the center, one member assumed the role of “Freddie” within the ensemble, commanding the stage with his powerful and awe-inspiring voice, while the remaining members provided flawless harmonies as his background support. When the operatic section of the song kicked in, they harmonized in perfect unison, elevating the performance to new heights.
