Misty Dojero was breastfeeding her 10-month-old baby at the Nessler Aquatics Center in Texas City, Texas, when a lifeguard began “berating” her for breastfeeding in public, according to KHOU 11 News. Misty tells the news station that the pool attendant intervened and told her she had to leave before a police officer showed up.
Misty posted her story on social media where it went viral. Several mothers came to Misty’s defense to apologize for the accident. Texas law states that a mother has the right to breastfeed her child wherever she is permitted to do so. Texas City officials released a statement regarding the incident:
“We, the City of Texas, are reviewing the nurses’ concerns raised at Nessler Pool and how they were handled by our staff. We apologize to Misty Daugereaux for clearly being offended by the way she was treated at the City Center. Policies and procedures will be reviewed and revised as necessary. Any deficiencies related to our employee procedures through further training.”
Since Misty’s story is always captivating, a group of moms decided to put on a show at the Nessler Aquatic Center. The mothers gathered at the pool with their children and said they hoped to normalize breastfeeding in public as it is legal in all states, including Texas. “I can’t imagine so much support from moms, not even in Texas, from moms who live out of state,” Misty told KHOU 11 News.
