Kelly Brokebank went to the prom in a sleeveless dress because she wanted to prove something to the world.

Her decision was very brave, as nearly 45% of her body is scarred from a fire that broke out in her home two years ago. The young woman nearly died in the fire and spent more than a month in the hospital undergoing multiple surgeries to repair the skin.

While the recovery process has often been difficult, Kelly said she feels lucky given the circumstances, as she realizes she may have suffered more serious injuries.

The girl has always been an athlete and a 10th grader, saying that at first she didn’t think she would be like that again after the fire, but over time she became more comfortable in her own skin.

This made her wear a sleeveless prom dress and not only did her boyfriend, colleagues and friends say she was beautiful, but she also won the title of prom.
