As a third and fourth bear calmly ascend the steps, the first bear moves closer to Conley, almost within arm’s reach. Despite the temptation, Conley wisely refrains from attempting to pet the bear on the head. Instead, he observes the creature with mild curiosity, likening its behavior to that of a cat, playfully sniffing around. Maintaining his composure, Conley casually remarks, “That’s a little close, come on now!”

Facing such a situation, most people would undoubtedly be terrified, but Conley’s calm demeanor proves to be the right approach. He understands that wild animals can be unpredictable, and in such encounters, it’s crucial to remain composed and avoid any sudden movements or noises.

Following Conley’s gentle suggestion, the bear seems almost obedient, backing away and rejoining the rest of its bear family. They saunter off into the woods, continuing on their next adventure, as if this interaction were just another regular occurrence.

For Patrick Conley, this isn’t the first time the bears have graced his property in Asheville, North Carolina. Since 2017, the same group of four bears has been making regular visits, forming a remarkably close-knit family unit
