After hearing the woman’s version of events, Judge Caprio turned his daughter after calling her onstage and saying, “You hear that? Now we’re going to make a decision.” He was told to choose the fairest option out of 4 for his mother’s expenses.
These options were: 1. His mother pays the initial fine of $100 and $200 in costs 2. His mother only pays the fine of $100 3. His mother pays $50, half of the fine initial 4. His mother pays nothing.
Given these options, the little girl replies, “I’m going to charge him number 3. I’ll charge him $50.” It was around 9.20am and Judge Caprio asked the little girl what she ate for breakfast and she replied that she was ‘starving’ as she had been in court since 8am without eating. In response, he did nothing for the mother on the condition that she take her children to breakfast.
While the woman may have made a mistake by standing up illegally, the Rhode Island judge was more than fair. He made her a deal that he would let her have the ticket as long as she took her hungry children to breakfast, which she happily accepted.
