As NBC News San Diego reported, with sea lion pupping season nearing, lifeguards and rangers were on high alert to monitor the crowds surrounding the sea mammals lounging on the beach. Their duty was to ensure the safety of both the animals and beachgoers.
In addition to lifeguards on patrol, the beach area was adorned with posters and cautionary signs warning onlookers to steer clear of approaching the sea lions.
One of the posters highlighted the potential danger, stating that sea lions can bite, particularly when agitated, and emphasized that harassing them is illegal.
It remains uncertain whether the girl or her mother will face charges or fines for throwing rocks at the sea lion, as depicted in the video, which has garnered over 3 million views on TikTok.
Online, users have expressed gratitude towards the lifeguard for taking appropriate action and removing the girl from the beach.
“I’m appalled that people would even consider getting close to them. Wild animals can be so unpredictable, and having your children that close is astounding,” one user commented.
“The guards need to be there consistently. I’ve been there four times, and every time, some kid is bothering the seals or walruses. The parents are clueless,” another user remarked.
“The fact that lifeguards have to safeguard both people and wildlife is astonishing; they should be compensated more,” echoed another sentiment.
“I appreciate how the lifeguard handled the situation,” remarked another user.
