Princess Diana may have died more than two decades ago in a tragic car accident, but she remains one of the most recognizable members of the royal family throughout history. Although she disagreed with some of his actions and choices, she was a truly unique woman who always managed to stand out in a crowd.
Although Princess Diana took much of her time with her royal duties, she was still able to remain a loving mother to Harry and William, her two sons. Evidence of her devotion to Prince William and Prince Harry can be seen in a video that surfaced in the early 1990s.
The old video resurfaced in April this year and shows Princess Diana racing against other mums on Sports Day. The Queen was seen wearing a skirt and looking very competitive as she ran barefoot. According to Harper’s Bazaar, the video was posted via the @OregonProgress Twitter account.
PopSugar explains that the race was held for the annual sports day at Wetherby School, the nursery school which Prince William and Harry attended. It is customary for schools in England to hold a race for parents at the end of the event.
Harper’s Bazaar added that Prince Harry himself took part in a Sports Day run. He was taking part in a sack race and footage showed him inside a sack of potatoes jumping towards the finish line. He was seven years old at the time.
Sporting events and playing outdoors were things Princess Diana enjoyed from childhood, and that love lasted until her death in 1997. The title Princess can be intimidating to associate with her name, but Diana has always lived his life without caring much. Prying eyes watch his every move. One of his favorite things was spending as much time as possible with his two sons Harry and William, details like History Extra.
Diana was known as a fun mother as she was pictured with Harry and William at theme parks and on roller coaster rides. However, Diana really wanted to give the princes a taste of normality. In an interview Prince William gave to ABC News, he said:
“She wanted so badly to let us see the harshness of real life. And I can’t thank her enough for that, because reality bites so hard, and one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is, at what lucky and privileged point many of us are, especially me.”
Participating in your child’s sports day and taking your children to theme parks is very different from Royal Family Day. Another thing the late princess did to break ‘royal protocol’ was to take William and Harry to McDonald’s at the weekend.
According to mom.com, Darren McGrady, the former head of the royal family, told Marie Claire that she often takes the boys to American fast food joints.
“I remember one day the princess came into the kitchen and said, ‘Cancel lunch for the boys I’m going out, we’re going to McDonald’s,'” McGrady said. my Royal Highness, I can do this, I can make burgers.” And she said, “No, that’s the game they want.”
Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell confirmed McGrady’s story, calling it a “Saturday night ritual” for the Royal Family.
“The three were going to McDonald’s for a Big Mac and fries before going back to see The Blind Date,” Burrell told Mirror UK. “The three of them were squatting on this huge stuffed hippo that Diana had in her living room. They loved the Blind Date and I could hear them all screaming things like ‘Oh don’t choose it!’ ”
William and Harry have paid tribute to Diana over the years.
Her eldest son talked about the things his mother had missed. “I would like to take his advice,” William told British magazine GQ in 2017.
“I would like to have her opinion. I would have liked to have met Catherine and seen the children grow up and seen the children grow up. It saddens me that she does not do it, because they will never know her.”
In September 2019, Harry retraced his mother’s footsteps as he walked through an old minefield. Diana is best known for walking through an Angolan minefield that was partially cleared in 1997.
