A media release from Saanich Police detailed the officers’ participation in a week of rehearsals leading up to a joint performance with over 100 students. While the dance mob was a joyful experience, the statement revealed a deeper purpose behind the collaboration.
The statement explained, “One of the main objectives of this event was to foster a special relationship between students and the police. This was accomplished through joint dance classes, where officers and students could share laughter and collaborate towards the common goal of performing together in a flash mob.”
It went on to say, “Participating in a public flash mob dance was undoubtedly outside the comfort zone for most officers. However, they willingly stepped outside their usual roles to create a unique and lasting memory for our community. On the day of the flash mob at Uptown, smiles adorned the faces of everyone present.”
The beauty of dance lies in its ability to connect people regardless of their backgrounds. In this instance, both high school students and police officers dropped their guards, establishing a sense of comfort and camaraderie while working toward a shared objective. Not everyone may feel at ease with dancing, but by fostering an environment of comfort and acceptance, both the officers and students shared an unforgettable experience
