Cases of elderly abuse are not uncommon. In the first place, the decision to place the seniors in a nursing home is a complex one. After all, we hope and pray the seniors will receive the best care possible. While we are aware cases of elderly abuse are rampant at the nursing homes, we hope no harm befalls our loved ones.
89-year –old George Karam is a resident at a nursing home in Ottawa, Canada. His grandson noticed George had unexplained injuries. Something was not adding up. George had bruises and cuts on his face. The family was told that he had fallen out of bed, but no satisfactory explanation was given.
The family installed cameras in the presence of Garry. J. Armstrong, a staff member at the facility. George’s grandson discovered that 44-year-old Jie Xiao verbally and physically abused their grandfather.
Xiao was repeatedly seen beating the old man during a routine change of clothes. The angry grandson called the police, and the caregiver was arrested the same night. The 89-year-old was taken to hospital for further assessment, but doctors found no serious physical injuries.
