This 11-year-old girl from Harbin, Heilongjiang, China was born blind, but that doesn’t stop her from going to school on her own.

According to Xinhua News Agency, the schoolgirl suffers from a congenital condition known as optic nerve hypoplasia, a condition in which the optic nerve is underdeveloped.

5 years ago, she attended Harbin Special Education School. She and her mother rented a house near the school.

Every morning, using her cane, the young girl goes alone to her school. However, she is unaware that her mother will silently follow her until she arrives safely at school.

Her mother, Yu Ling, said she encouraged her daughter to go to school on her own to help her develop her confidence and independence as she grows up.

When it’s time for her daughter to go to school, she will follow her from behind, keeping her distance from the girl so she doesn’t know her mother is following her to protect her safety.

Although Yu Ling’s main goal is to let her daughter go to school alone to teach her to be independent, the mother does not watch her daughter walk alone.

Sometimes a loving mother gives signals to cyclists and motorists to stop when the daughter has to cross the road.

His heart is broken when the young girl struggles to find her way but stops herself from helping him. However, she knew it was the best she could do for her daughter.

“I know there will come a time when she has to leave me and I hope that when the time comes she can be independent. She needs to be strong and confident. I want her to get over everything on her own,” said the mother. Credit: Sin Chew Daily
