For Catarina Raimondo, 75, from Quetzal, Quechi, Guatemala, this problem manifested as a very harsh reality that she had to endure. When her son abandoned her, she was forced to live on the streets.
Before Katrina’s life took an unfortunate turn, she had a house full of valuables. Her son wanted to study accounting in the United States, but needed money to pay tuition. Catarina decided to make a big sacrifice and take out a mortgage to pay for her studies.
Katharina used her house as collateral for a college loan and also sold all of her valuables to allow her son to travel to the United States.
She was betting in the hope that her son’s career would bring her prosperity upon his return from the United States. Unfortunately, Catarina has not heard from her son since he left Guatemala. Soon Catarina’s mortgage defaulted and the bank took possession of her house, forcing her to take to the streets.
Luckily for her, a local church discovered Catarina’s tragic story, including that of a man named Alexandre Cedillo. He set up a fundraising initiative to pay for a new home for Catarina, and she now has a home again. Although her son left her in misery, she hopes to see him again soon.
Katrina doesn’t hold a grudge against her son, but when her story was posted online, people got angry. People have pointed out that her son is ungrateful, and some have suggested that he may not have been aware of his plight. We hope that word will reach her and that he will come back to her and reward her for her sacrifices.
