Ashley Uber, 16, wanted to travel alone on a recent trip from Baltimore to Rochester, New York. The fact that she was deaf made her mother, Loretta Uber, hesitate. But Ashley wanted to exercise some independence.
The journey wouldn’t be easy, but Ashley wanted to do it on her own. Her mother dropped her off at the airport, then waited nearby to make sure Ashley got on the plane. It took some time, but Loretta received a letter from her daughter. She was on the plane.
Ashley shared a note she received from a Delta flight attendant. started with,
“Hi Ashley. My name is Jana and I’ll be your host.” The hostess told him about the reading light and call agent buttons above. Ashley was also directed to the nearest exits. Finally, the note ended with: “Feel free to ask if you need help. Once again, my name is Janna and welcome aboard our CRJ200.
“I put it in my bag,” Ashley told WJLA in an interview. “I still have it. I will cherish it.
Speaking about the deaf community, Ashley said, “It’s important for them to feel involved and uncomfortable.” Communication is essential to anyone’s success. Deaf people only need to be able to communicate effectively. It’s about making them feel comfortable and comfortable.
Loretta was relieved and shared the note on Twitter.
Delta Air Lines released a statement according to the WJLA acknowledging the flight attendant’s interest. The airline also plans to issue special pins to attendees who know sign language. This will make it easier for deaf customers to get help. They said, “Our goal is to make the world a more inclusive place, and to ensure ease of travel for all.”
