At this point, Captain Terry Russo enters the story. While Captain Russo can’t get Trinity’s hair back, he can give her some of it.
Inspired by the great suffering of children with cancer, Captain Russo, along with two other captains and two first mates, decide to grow their hair so they can donate it to Locks of Love, which donates hair to children battling cancer.
The five Hunters had to make a huge commitment by donating their hair. On average, donated hair is 8 to 14 inches long. Despite their hair growing to this unusual length for a year, the fishermen were more than willing to help.
Speaking to Fox 13 News reporters, Captain Russo said he feels comfortable helping the kids. Captain Derek Thomas reiterated the feelings of Captain Russo, expressing that with the help of a child, they are helping the future.
As their hair grew, the fishermen also collected donations, giving a check for $8,500 to the National Children’s Cancer Foundation.
When it was finally time to donate their hair, the fishermen gathered at Great Clips in Tampa, where they also met Trinity. Salon manager Susan Smith said she appreciates everything the fishermen have done to make kids with cancer feel more normal.
It’s heartbreaking, Smith says, and can only imagine how a young girl would lose her hair and support charities like Locks of Love by giving free haircuts to people who donate their hair.
