Hearing a child’s first words is a special moment, but it is made even more special when you’ve been waiting 5 years to hear them.
Briana Bnakenship is a mother who never knew when her 5-year-old daughter, Taylor would speak her first word, or if she even could speak. Taylor was diagnosed with nonverbal autism, it’s a condition where the child is unable to speak. The young girl understands bits of the English language but she doesn’t have the capacity to respond and string sentences together.
But the mother and daughter’s life was all about to change. As Briana and Taylor sat in their car at the McDonald’s drive-thru, Briana got a massive shock that left her in tears.
“I am ugly crying in the McDonald’s parking lot and the employees probably think I’m crazy. In the drive-thru, I suddenly heard Taylor say ‘MAMA.’ For those of you that don’t know, Taylor is five and is nonverbal autistic. She has NEVER said a word. EVER.”
Stunned by Taylor’s sudden outburst, Briana quickly grabbed her phone and started recording this shining moment.
“I’m pretty sure I held up the drive thru line,” she said, “but there was no way I wasn’t getting proof of this. I can’t explain how unbelievably grateful and ecstatic I am right now.”
Taylor’s first word gives hope that one day she will be able to communicate just like any other child. Taylor has a long way to go, but this miraculous moment is the first step towards a brighter future.
