Ashleigh Miller Cross has a daughter who is only 10-month-old. She is a proud loving mom and she takes care very well of her little daughter, which is what made what happened one fateful day at the store all the more frantic.

One day, she went out shopping for groceries at her local supermarket. After a short time, Ashleigh started feeling unwell. She quickly made her way to the store’s bathroom.

She had no idea though what was the cause of her pain.

Malcolm Comeau, is the assistant store manager. At that time, he was just coming out of his office after his lunch break. He was heading back to work when he heard Ashleigh screaming. Malcolm rushed to the bathroom door and threw it open to see what on earth was happening.

Malcolm couldn’t believe his eyes when he saw the source of Ashleigh’s pain. Ashleigh, too was terrified and confused. It turned out, Ashleigh was giving birth – although she didn’t even know she was pregnant. another member of staff who had arrived for her shift stopped by the bathroom to help, too.

The assistant manager recalls: “The baby (had) already proceeded to come, so I grabbed my phone right away, called 911 …  We have a [medical] clinic right here at the store, so I went over there to get the doctor, as well, while I was on the phone with 911. The doctor came over and one of our cashiers helped her finish delivering her baby.”

Fortunately, Ashleigh, with the help of by-standers, was able to deliver a healthy baby boy. Emergency responders arrived and transported Ashleigh and her newborn to hospital. The 8-pound  baby boy was later named Ezra.

Before going into labour, Ashleigh had no clue that she had another child on the way, but was all smiles afterwards. She explained that her previous pregnancy – only ten months before – apparently masked this current pregnancy.

“I really had no idea. I presumed I hadn’t lost any weight because I only had Mia 10 months ago, so I mean I didn’t grow any extra, so it’s just the same size. I didn’t have any cravings.”

Malcom, who has worked in the same store for over 30 years, admits he’s never heard of a woman giving birth there. He did say a couple of people have been married there, though. “It’s like some other instincts take over. You just don’t think about anything else. It’s like, get help and do whatever you can,” he said.

Following the birth, Ashleigh and her partner celebrated with a rather fitting “welcome to the world” photo:

It was a blessing that everyone surrounding Ashleigh was extremely helpful in the situation. However, Malcolm stood out that day as the new mom’s angel.

He said: “She did tell me out of everything that went on, my face is the only face she recognizes out of everybody else that was there. So I guess I made an impression – like she made on me.”
