When 22-year-old Pedro Viloria went to work at the McDonald’s restaurant in Doral, Florida, Tuesday morning, he thought it would be a typical day. He had no idea he would be saving someone’s life before lunchtime!Pedro was working at the drive-thru window when the next car in line just rolled right past the window. As the car went by, he noticed the woman in the driver’s seat seemed to be making some jerking movements.Confused, Pedro tried to figure out what was going on, and that’s when he heard it: two kids screaming in the back seat.
“Mother! Mother! Stop it!” they yelled.
Pedro knew something was wrong. Without wasting a second, he sprang into action, jumping out of the drive-thru window and rushing to the woman’s aide.
He, along with another employee, started doing CPR on the unresponsive driver. An off-duty fire rescue officer, who happened to be in the restaurant at the time, also came out to assist until paramedics could arrive.
The woman, who was later identified as an off-duty police officer, was rushed to the hospital where she was reportedly recovering. But the story could have had a much more tragic ending had it not been for the quick actions of this brave hero.
When Pedro found out he had saved a police officer’s life, he was stunned.
“I saved an officer’s life?” he asked. “I can’t believe this.”
Pedro is known as a standout employee and his boss and fellow workers say his actions do not surprise them.
“First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers are with the officer and her family during this difficult time,” said Alex Menendez, the local McDonald’s owner. “I think I speak for our McDonald’s family when I say how proud we are of Pedro. He is an excellent employee, so it didn’t surprise me that he took immediate action and jumped through a window to help save this woman.”
Pedro is now being hailed a hero by thousands of people around the country and the world, but the brave young man says he was just following his instincts.
“If I would have had to die to save that woman, I would have done it,” he said. “My brain was on hero mode.”
